Radio Frequency Devices

Sarvesh Kumar, Manish K. Kashyap · 2025

Chapter 6 is devoted to radiofrequency devices that accelerate, bunch or chop the particles in the longitudinal direction. It explains the basic principle of oscillating electric fields and then introduces components like drift tube linacs, RF bunchers, standing wave structures, and radio frequency quadrupoles, etc. The chapter explains key concepts such as transit time factor, phase focusing, synchronous phase, and energy gain. Practical structures such as the Widerøe and Alvarez linacs are described with clarity. To provide a quantitative feel for the principles and techniques discussed, a selection of numerical exercises is given at the chapter's conclusion.
