A multifaceted approach to security in edge IoT

Jomina John, Jasraj Singh · 2025

The efficiency and responsiveness of Internet of Things (IoT) systems are improved by edge IoT by processing data closer to their source, but this also poses serious security risks. In particular, distributed architectures, devices with limited resources, and the management of sensitive data are some of the edge IoT vulnerabilities that are examined in this chapter. The different security risks, including data interception, denial-of-service attacks, and the use of diverse device settings are evaluated. By means of an extensive analysis of recent research, the remedies comprise machine learning-based security protocols, blockchain integration, and lightweight encryption systems. In order to solve the persistent security concerns, the chapter also proposes future research topics that are needed. Enhancing gateway security, creating scalable security protocols, putting biometric authentication into practice, and using blockchain and cloud computing to secure data storage are some of the main areas of study. The significance of developing IoT security standards and resolving edge device power constraints are also emphasized in this chapter. Safeguarding edge IoT environments requires a multipronged strategy that includes both standardized practices and technology advancements. For edge IoT systems to be widely used and trusted, security mechanisms must continue to advance in order to guarantee the privacy, integrity, and availability of data in those systems.
