Escape Room Method in Healthcare

Ensuring healthy, effective, and efficient patient care stands as the foremost priority in health education. To guarantee the highest level of patient safety, healthcare professionals must possess the appropriate skills and knowledge. Nurses often operate within a stressful, intricate, and dynamic environment, demanding quick thinking and decision-making. While traditional learning models like case-solving enable students to grasp content and identify potential solutions, they may not adequately address stress management. The awareness of escape rooms, a newly emerging educational model, is growing not only in nursing but also in other fields. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively review and conduct bibliometric analysis of escape room studies in nursing, shedding light on the current status and applications of research in the field. The analysis of the documents reached in the analysis of this research using the bibliometric analysis method was carried out using the VOSviewer (Nees Jan van Eck and Ludo Valtman Center for Science and Technology Studies Leiden University), MS Excel (Microsoft England). As the research shows, 52 studies on escape room research were conducted in the field of nursing. It was determined that the first research article was published in 2018, and the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development (n=8, 15.3%) had the most research on the subject. The most cited study was “Can You Escape? Creating an Escape Room to Facilitate Active Learning”. It is recommended that the escape room model, a novel applied teaching approach, be bolstered by clinical research, and efforts should be made to increase the number of publications examining its effectiveness.
