Low-Cost Wi-Fi Sensing: Challenges, Advances, and a Framework for Edge Deployment

Wi-Fi sensing has emerged as a transformative technology that leverages existing wireless infrastructure to enable non-intrusive environmental awareness.By analyzing signal variations particularly Channel State Information (CSI).Wi-Fi sensing supports a wide range of applications including human activity recognition, health monitoring, and security.This literature review synthesizes recent advances in the field, highlighting key techniques, platforms, and machine learning models.It also discusses the challenges of environmental variability, hardware limitations, and privacy concerns.As a novel contribution, we propose a conceptual framework for low-cost, edge-friendly Wi-Fi sensing systems, emphasizing deployability in resource-constrained environments.With the advent of IEEE 802.11bf standardization and benchmark datasets, Wi-Fi sensing is poised to become a cornerstone of ambient intelligence in smart environments.
