A Novel Metaheuristic Approach to Monolith Decomposition into Microservices

Migrating monolithic applications to microservices is a challenging task. In particular, the monolith decomposition into small size, limited context, and independent microservices is the most addressed migration issue in the literature. To tackle this challenge, we introduce a novel approach to monolith decomposition by framing it as a multi-objective bin-packing problem. This is the first approach that leverages Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III) to address monolith decomposition integrating database decomposition with multi-objective optimization. Preliminary experimental results on a monolith application indicate the potential efficacy of the approach in obtaining high-quality monolith decompositions with independent databases.
