Software-defined network (SDN) and blockchain (BC) are regarded as cutting-edge technologies that render flexible implementations in novel networking applications and have a wide range of applicability in device-to-device communication. The construction, management, and operation of networked systems have been completely transformed by the application of blockchain in SDN, which ensures scalability, privacy, and security. This paper presents a thorough analysis of blockchain integration with SDN, emphasising its uses for protecting device-to-device connections. In this regard, the role of blockchain in enhancing security and enhancement of network operation is also explored. The contribution of blockchain in decentralized identity management, enabling secured data sharing, implementation of smart contracts, intrusion detection and prevention in automated transactions are described. Despite promising results, the integration of these two technologies raises security concerns and hence the potential defence solutions are discussed. Also, further study on robotics and AI in BC-SDN frameworks would improve scalability, cost-efficiency, and security. It is also pointed that the creation of agent-centric SDN frameworks could result from using holochain as a BC substitute.
