The paper presents a new way of visualizing power flow information in power grid systems. The visualization method could be applied to predict power flow disturbances in various power grid systems as compared to traditional approaches. The method includes using power flow graphs that are generated using the Perl and R programming languages. In the experimental work, the method is used to display the power flow information for both small sized systems and large scale systems. The experiments were performed starting from the IEEE 14 bus to the IEEE 118 bus networks. It could be inferred from the results that the power flows in all the systems could be investigated using the proposed visualization methods, and further analysis could signify significant disturbances to each system that could not be identified using conventional numerical or tabular methods. The approach could be extended to identify the presence of singular or multiple disturbances and to predict the large-scale cascading of perturbations in smart grid systems.
