Performance Comparison of Encryption Algorithms on Nordic Thingy Mesh Networks

This study presents a comparative empirical analysis of three modern encryption algorithmsASCON, SALSA20, and XCHACHA20-implemented on a Bluetooth mesh network of Nordic Thingy53 devices. We evaluate power consumption characteristics of these algorithms under various network configurations, ranging from single-node to ten-node networks. Measurements include power consumption on average operation states. Our results indicate significant differences in efficiency among the three algorithms, with XCHACHA20 showing higher power consumption in most test scenarios, while SALSA20 demonstrates better performance in several configurations.
