One of the most latest advances in the field of wireless technology is device-to-device (D2D) communication, which was established by the 3GPP to support the developing 5G and beyond architecture. Direct communication between close devices is made possible by this intriguing method, which does not require any involvement of conventional network infrastructure. Due to its potential to improve connection in proximity-based settings, D2D communication has attracted a lot of demand. However D2D communication in 5G and beyond has many security issues. The primary aim is to provide a system that guarantees mutual authentication across various users, while simultaneously safeguarding privacy and allowing secure device discovery. This work proposes a lightweight authentication protocol for D2D devices that enables secure communication. Our suggested scheme incorporates permutation operations to enhance privacy and security without increasing memory and computational cost. The proposed protocol was formally verified by using scythe tool. This work presents a lightweight authentication scheme for D2D devices that facilitates secure communication.
