Ten Steps for EBS Integration and Ten Lessons Learned

Matthew R. Hallowell · 2025

This concluding chapter outlines how organizations can operationalize and integrate EBS within existing safety programs. It begins with a reflection on why conventional safety strategies, though effective at reducing minor injuries, have not achieved similar progress with SIFs and emphasizes the need for a distinct, scientifically grounded approach. The chapter presents a ten-step process for integrating EBS, including leadership alignment, readiness assessment, piloting, training, integration into core safety activities, measurement, and sustained reinforcement. It also shares ten lessons learned from early adopters, highlighting the importance of pacing, supervisor engagement, standardized tools, and learning from aggregate trends rather than isolated incidents. Finally, the chapter argues that commitment to strong controls, consistent measurement, and shared learning is the best path forward in SIF prevention. EBS is positioned not as a one-time initiative, but as a discipline that will evolve through continued research and collaboration.
