As cities around the world seek to control and reduce their energy consumption dedicated to public lighting, Internet of Things (IoT) network technologies can be employed to efficiently control streetlights. In particular, when possible, the streetlights could be turned off or dimmed and turned back on when a pedestrian or car is detected nearby. In such an application, all the streetlights in a street should work together as a group, requiring a highly reliable and low-latency communication mechanism. In this context, we propose a IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) multicast-based solution for node-to-node communication in a wireless mesh network, with Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network (Wi-SUN) as the underlying physical and link layer technology, and compare it against the state-of-the-art solutions, including the standard version of RPL.
