A Minimized Conduction Loss Multiport SSCB Design with Post-Fault Optimization

Yannal Nawafleh, Xiaoqing Song · 2025

This paper presents a novel design for a multiport solid-state circuit breaker (M-SSCB) optimized for low- and medium-voltage direct current (LVDC and MVDC) applications. The proposed design utilizes mechanical isolation switches to address post-fault conduction loss challenges, ensuring significantly reduced conduction losses even after fault clearance. This enhancement minimizes thermal stress on SiC devices, provides galvanic isolation for maintenance safety, and improves system reliability. The operation principles, including coordinated switching sequences, ensure seamless fault interruption and restoration of normal operation. Experimental validation using a three-port SSCB prototype demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed approach, highlighting its potential for applications in DC microgrids, electric propulsion systems, and other advanced DC distribution systems.
