Edge Computing with Kubernetes: KubeEdge in 5G, SATCOM, and Tactical Networks

In this paper, we discuss edge computing, arguing that Kubernetes may be a viable path to leverage modern software architecture and development methodologies as part of tactical edge computing. This research is applicable to civil-military collaboration scenarios, like disaster relief operations, as well as military defense applications. Building on previous NATO research, we specifically target one of the potentially most suitable implementations of Kubernetes to date for our experiments: KubeEdge. The paper explains our motivation, the test setup, and findings from deploying and using KubeEdge in emulated 5G, SATCOM and tactical networks.
