The metaverse represents the convergence of physical and virtual worlds that form an immersive environment where users interact in real-time through avatars to participate in diverse activities. It embodies a shared, persistent, scalable virtual space supporting limitless interactions. Existing literature often describes the metaverse using interchangeable terms such as components, elements, features, technologies, and enabler technologies. However, these terms carry distinct meanings depending on the context. This chapter clarifies these distinctions by organising them into four primary categories: key elements that outline the core principles enhancing user experiences; key components, the foundational systems shaping the metaverse structure; metaverse technologies, directly facilitating its functionality; and enabler technologies, supporting but not exclusive to the metaverse. Extended reality technologies, including virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, are pivotal to immersive environments integrating physical and virtual worlds. Beyond technology, the metaverse reshapes the social, economic, and cultural dimensions by transforming connections, experiences, and opportunities for users. Realising its full potential requires significant capital investment and technological advancements, where emerging innovations in artificial intelligence and other domains contribute to the progress of driving a more mature metaverse capable of delivering its transformative vision.
