Among recent advances in healthcare technologies, one of the significant challenges is to maintain the security and privacy of patient data. Due to issues such as fraudulent use of personal medical data, patients hesitate to provide their personal data to any healthcare system. Patients can be given ownership of their data and are able to check and retrieve it as and when necessary. This issue could be minimized by deploying decentralized solutions in the healthcare system. It also provides the benefit of eliminating the intermediaries and helps improve the relationship with their associates. A decentralized healthcare system represents a shift from traditional, centralized models of healthcare delivery to a more distributed approach. In a decentralized system, healthcare services, data management, and decision-making processes are spread across various nodes, including patients, healthcare providers, and technological platforms. This model leverages digital technologies such as telemedicine, blockchain, and electronic health records to provide more personalized, efficient, and accessible healthcare services. Furthermore, the components of decentralized healthcare such as blockchain technology, telemedicine and remote monitoring, and patient-centered care will be discussed in detail. Benefits of decentralization such as increased accessibility, enhanced data security and privacy, efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and empowerment of patients are covered. Finally, challenges in decentralized healthcare are elaborated.
