Trust in the future
Samuele Vinanzi · 2025
Abstract This chapter explores trust relationships between humans and robots from a societal perspective. It begins by addressing ethical considerations in artificial intelligence (AI), discussing both AI ethics (the guidelines for the ethical development of AI systems) and machine ethics, which focuses on creating robots capable of reasoning based on ethical principles. The latter is presented in various forms, reflecting different levels of robotic agency, from machines programmed to avoid violating ethical laws to robots capable of evaluating the ethical implications of their actions and incorporating this reasoning into their decision-making. The chapter then examines policy issues surrounding AI in contemporary society, exploring concepts such as trustworthy AI and meaningful human control. Finally, it summarizes the key concepts discussed throughout the book and offers concluding reflections for the reader.
