Leveraging generative artificial intelligence for the development of speech-delivery competencies in the public speaking course

This single-class activity allows students to workshop their public-speaking skills by delivering an entirely artificial intelligence (AI)-generated speech without prior preparation. The use of generative AI in this activity allows students to focus solely on their delivery skills rather than speech content. The activity also fosters conversation about the use of AI in the public speaking course. Through the activity, students are encouraged to critique the content and structure of the AI-generated speeches, and instructors can discuss appropriate guidelines for generative AI use in class.Course Public Speaking.Objectives This activity will (a) utilize generative AI to improve students’ public-speaking competencies related to delivery, (b) help students recognize and critique potential shortcomings of AI-generated speeches, and (c) foster discussion around appropriate uses of AI in speech writing.
