Smarttendance: A BLE-Based Mobile Application for Real-Time Student Attendance Tracking
Luka Munivrana, Vladimir Pleština, S. Gotovac · 2025
student attendance is a crucial but time-consuming task in academic institutions. Traditional attendance methods, such as manual roll calls or paper-based sign-ins, are inefficient and prone to errors. This paper presents Smarttendance, an innovative attendance tracking system that leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and mobile applications to automate student presence verification. The system enables professors to scan for nearby student devices broadcasting unique identifiers, significantly reducing administrative workload while improving accuracy and transparency. Developed using Flutter and Dart, Smarttendance ensures cross-platform compatibility, allowing seamless operation on Android and iOS devices. Fire-store Database and Firebase Authentication facilitate real-time attendance tracking and secure data storage. The proposed system is energy-efficient, utilizing BLE’s low-power mode to minimize battery consumption while maintaining high detection accuracy. A prototype implementation demonstrates the feasibility of the approach, highlighting its advantages in scalability and ease of use. However, challenges such as iOS compatibility, security vulnerabilities, and database storage limitations need further investigation. Future work will focus on optimizing BLE scanning efficiency, enhancing data privacy measures, and evaluating system performance in large classroom environments.
