Increasing the Awareness and Participation of Young Women in Cybersecurity

S. Ida Evangeline · 2025

Despite women making up a tiny percentage of the workforce, cybersecurity has expanded rapidly and continues to grow in response to the ever increasing complexity of cyber threats in the world. Leave it to men to lead the race while women almost trail, thus narrowing down the diversity and innovation while contributing to the worldwide shortage of cybersecurity professionals. It investigates the principal obstacles that keep young women from participating in cybersecurity, from the prevailing social stereotypes to gaps in education, discriminatory work climates, to psychological hurdles like confidence gaps and impostor syndrome. It looks at how cultural expectations and systemic barriers dictate where women can and cannot go in terms of their career choices and professional experiences and can sadly work to dissuade women from entering or staying in the cybersecurity field. The chapter addresses these challenges by presenting successful initiatives and strategies used to enhance the participation of females in cybersecurity.
