An Implementation of DOT 1X for Secure Network Access in SDN
Vaidehi Shah, Pranay Yadav · 2025
The rising use of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has rendered secure network access a significant concern. 802.1X (DOT1X) is a prevalent port-based network access control protocol that authenticates devices prior to permitting network access. This article demonstrates the implementation of 802.1X inside a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) framework to augment security and dynamically enforce access controls. Utilizing the centralized management and programmability of SDN, we incorporate 802.1X authentication with an SDN controller to provide dynamic policy enforcement and real-time monitoring. The suggested approach employs RADIUS for authentication, Open Flow for network management, and an SDN-based authentication server to oversee access determinations. The performance study indicates that the implementation enhances security without causing substantial delay, making it a feasible option for safe access control in contemporary SDN implementations.
