Quantum Computing and Quantum Information Science

Murali Krishna Pasupuleti · 2024

Abstract: Quantum Computing and Quantum Information Science offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary exploration of the mathematical principles, computational models, and engineering challenges that define the field of quantum information. Building upon the foundational postulates of quantum mechanics, the book develops a formal framework to understand how quantum systems encode, process, and communicate information. Core concepts such as superposition, entanglement, unitary evolution, and quantum measurement are systematically introduced and linked to computational structures like quantum circuits and quantum Turing machines. The book addresses key challenges in quantum algorithm design and complexity theory, with detailed treatments of Shor’s algorithm, Grover’s search, quantum Fourier transforms, and quantum phase estimation. It also examines quantum entropy, mutual information, and fidelity, constructing a rigorous information-theoretic basis for quantum communication and quantum cryptography. Protocols such as BB84 and E91 are analyzed in terms of channel capacity, security, and entanglement distribution. Methodologically, the book integrates theory with real-world practice, evaluating quantum hardware platforms, decoherence models, and fault-tolerant error correction. Ethical and philosophical implications—such as algorithmic bias, access inequity, and dual-use concerns—are addressed in the context of international quantum governance. By synthesizing formalism, experimentation, and ethical analysis, the volume equips researchers and practitioners with a holistic understanding of quantum information science and its transformative potential across disciplines. Keywords: Quantum computing, quantum information theory, quantum algorithms, quantum cryptography, quantum hardware, quantum error correction, superposition, entanglement, quantum gates, quantum circuits, Shor’s algorithm, Grover’s algorithm, BB84, quantum Turing machine, quantum complexity theory, von Neumann entropy, quantum teleportation, quantum communication, fault tolerance, post-quantum security, ethical quantum technologies
