MODAL ANALYSIS OF AN UPRIGHT PIANO AND ITS CASE

T MORI, Ingolf Bork · 2023

When an upright piano Is played.not only the sound boom is set Into vibrations.Touching the suriace oi other pans like the cover gives the ieellng oi the vibration which of course may contribute partially to the sound eld. Therefore It Is reasonable to assume that the whole system simultaneously takes part In the radiation piocess. In order to estimate relative vibration amplitudes of individual components the whole upright piano including its case was measured by model analysis. While it is known that investigation of the sound bean! vibrations enables to determine the charaueristics oi the piano sound.the piano case.especially the upper panel and the cover can also have influences.because they exist direaiy between the player and the sound board. It will be shown in how far the resonances change the sound and the decay process of piano tones.
