Currently, Froebelian pedagogical approaches which are linked to child-community centred approaches, are spreading in early years settings with local, national, and international impact (see e.g. Froebelian Futures, 2021–2024). However, less is known about the impact and application of such Froebelian pedagogical approaches into community and public spaces (Konstantoni, 2021 ). Froebelian approaches are known as principled approaches which value: the importance of play; learning through and engaging with nature and hands on experiences; learning in a holistic way, where everything is seen as connected and interrelated; the important role of the adult as a knowledgeable and nurturing educator, who provides ‘freedom with guidance’ (observe carefully, support, and extend children&s;s interests); where children are valued for who they are, as unique individuals and autonomous learners; childhood in its own right; the importance of observation and self-reflection. This study critically reflects on the application of Froebelian principles in community spaces based on an experience of a pop-up Froebelian mobile community Play Cafe. The chapter argues that critically applying Froebelian principles sets the foundations for quality play and social spaces for families. The chapter critically defines quality and highlights the emergent need for such social and play spaces, especially in disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
