It has been witnessed that, with an increase in the level of digitalization, the concerns that are associated with data security, integration, and data confidentiality of the patients have also increased. Traditional centralized data storage is prone to being hacked and compromised, unauthorized access, and inadequate data exchange. Cryptography makes it possible for medical information to be secured, decentralized, and have a high level of transparency to complement interoperability from several actors across the medical field. This paper includes an understanding of the nature of blockchain as a technology, how it could be used to protect electronic health records, to increase the privacy of patients’ information, reduce fraud, and increase the effectiveness of the supply chain of the health care industry. Besides, the paper covers several use cases, issues like the integration of blockchain with other technologies like AI and IoT, and other trends in the development of the technology and its complexities, such as scalability and regulation. Thus, blockchain offers an opportunity to define the new generation of digital healthcare systems that would be secure, confidential, and easily accessible.
