Audio Basics

Ethan Winer, Michael S. Lawrence · Focal Press eBooks · 2025

This chapter explains the basic units of measurement for audio, both in the form of electronic signals and acoustic sound waves. It explains how the decibel is a common way to indicate audio values in the form of a ratio, either between two signal levels or between a signal level and an implied reference. It will also explain phase shift and time delay and the concept of Fourier analysis to analyze the frequency content of waveforms. Finally, it will explain the harmonic series and its relationship with distortion and introduce the concept of a null test.
