Locative Media Design as Sound Art and Scholarship

This chapter is a call for more scholar–artist collaborations at the intersections of mobile media, media accessibility, people and place, with an emphasis on locative audio experiences, inclusive of people who cannot see or cannot see well. The US National Endowment for the Arts–funded study illuminates inherent tensions that could arise between artistic expression and accessibility needs but also helps to establish fertile territory for an emerging genre of sound art interwoven with audio description.
