Whilst there is a growing body of literature on the utilization of artificial intelligence technologies in language learning, there remain numerous areas that require further investigation. To address these research gaps and explore the efficacy of artificial intelligence technologies implemented for educational purposes, this study will employ a systematic review comprising 16 studies alongside a bibliometric analysis of 234 studies utilizing both VOSviewer and CitNetExplorer. The study will unveil the preeminent authors, organizations, countries, and prevailing research themes in artificial intelligence-based language learning. Furthermore, it concludes that artificial intelligence technologies can generate intelligent educational environments and expedite personalized language learning, although they may also produce mixed language learning outcomes. Generally, language learners exhibit a favorable disposition towards the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in language education. The study also proposes future research directions.
