The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into library operations presented significant opportunities for enhancing information service delivery in academic institutions. This study investigated the application and impact of AI technologies among librarians in colleges of education in South-South Nigeria. A correlational research design was adopted, and data were collected from 175 librarians across 14 institutions using a structured questionnaire. Findings showed that machine learning algorithms and facial recognition systems were the most commonly used AI tools, while technologies such as chatbots and automated cataloguing systems were less integrated. Although librarians exhibited some awareness of AI concepts, their practical competence and formal training were limited. AI was primarily used to support search enhancement, streamline tasks, and improve access to information, but the overall level of application remained low. Perceived benefits such as increased efficiency and user satisfaction were acknowledged; however, challenges including inadequate funding, limited technical expertise, and insufficient institutional support constrained broader implementation. The study concluded that while AI has the potential to transform library service delivery, its effective adoption depended on improving librarians’ digital literacy, upgrading infrastructure, and implementing supportive institutional policies. It was recommended that library managers expand the scope of AI tool deployment and invest in staff training. Institutional leaders should ensure consistent funding and infrastructure to support AI adoption. Education policymakers should develop standardized frameworks to guide the integration of AI in academic libraries across Nigeria.
