Assessing Cybersecurity Readiness: Methods for Evaluating Prospective Undergraduate Students' Preparedness Before Transitioning to University
Nick Rwandarugali, Dirk P. Snyman · 2025
Cybersecurity awareness training in universities is crucial due to the high risk of students being exposed to threats. This jeopardizes both students and institutions. Students use electronic devices daily, however not every learner is equipped with adequate knowledge to deal with cyber threats. This study seeks to examine the role that tertiary education institutions play in providing cybersecurity awareness training as well as methods used to assess a prospective student's cybersecurity readiness. A systematic literature review was conducted to examine existing assessment methods and cybersecurity awareness programs used by universities. The review identified three key assessment techniques: knowledge assessments, behavioural assessments, and practical simulations or competitions. The paper also offers recommendations for universities to improve their cybersecurity training programs. By adopting these assessment methods, universities can better equip students with the skills necessary to protect themselves against cyber threats, ensuring they are well-prepared when entering the digital world.
