Unda.Xplora: a Portable Physical Computing Kit for Under-Resourced Classrooms and Homes in Africa to Make Stem Education Equitable, Accessible and Inclusive

John Mwihaki, Mercy Mbagara, Nivah Machani · 2025

STEM education plays a pivotal role in shaping the future, yet it faces significant challenges in underserved communities. These challenges include inadequate resources, a shortage of qualified educators and underdeveloped curricula. Many physical computing tools rely on a computer, reliable power, and internet connectivity, making them costly and inaccessible to marginalized groups. On the other hand, Unda.Xplora is a portable physical computing kit with a microcomputer, an interface, a rechargeable power supply, and an integrated breadboard for prototyping with digital electronics. Projects and guides are preloaded with step-by-step instructions empowering learners to work independently without the need for expert guidance. A trial evaluation involving 30 participants, including students and STEM trainers in a resource constrained setting, demonstrated that, Unda.Xplora effectively enhances problem solving, creativity, and innovation. This demonstrated the kit's ability to be a scalable, equitable approach to closing the STEM education gap for underserved communities.
