Focused Musical Artefact Analysis

Carsten Wernicke, Michael Ahlers · Intellect eBooks · 2025

The text introduces the method of Focused Musical Artefact Analysis, which derives from the work of Ulrike Froschauer and Manfred Lueger. This method is used to analyse physical musical artefacts and their embedding into everyday practice, examining their social, cultural, and technological contexts. It offers approaches for gaining new insights into the interaction between musical artefacts and users. Using data from a research project on musical interface designs, the added value for research involving musical artefacts is discussed. It lies particularly in the applicability of the methodology as a flexible framework to which context-sensitive methodological add-ons can be integrated.
