Camera, Action, False Alert! Tackling the Flood of False Alerts in Smart Home Cameras
Sunyoung Kim, Xiaohuan Zhang, Ge Gao · 2025
Smart home cameras are increasingly used for indoor and outdoor surveillance, offering real-time alerts and remote access that enhance home security. For older adults who wish to age in place, these devices provide peace of mind and an added layer of protection, while reassuring distant family members about their well-being. This study examines older adults’ experiences with smart home cameras to identify ways to maximize benefits and address challenges. Through semi-structured interviews with 13 older adults who had used smart home cameras for over six months and an analysis of Amazon reviews, motion detection performance, especially false alerts, and its operational features emerged as key challenges. Based on the findings, we propose design recommendations to improve the accessibility and usability of smart home cameras. By addressing key limitations, these recommendations aim to support independent living and ensure smart home cameras remain empowering tools that meet the needs of aging populations.
