The rapid Internet of Things (IoT) expansion and the increasing need for secure, scalable, and efficient data management have driven researchers and industries to explore innovative technological solutions. Among these, blockchain technology has emerged as a promising framework to address some of the fundamental challenges of IoT, including security, privacy, and trust. This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of combining blockchain with IoT systems. We begin by introducing the basic concepts of IoT and blockchain, then by exploring their architectures, offering insights into how these technologies complement each other. Next, we discuss the advantages of using blockchain for IoT alongside key applications across various domains. However, in this chapter, the problems related to the merging of IoT and blockchain include scalability, storage, and energy. Thus, a review of literature relevant to current research is established in this paper based on previous chapters to place the current state of the field. Based on that, the critical research gaps are identified, which highlight the unsolved issues and open doors for future advancements. The future research direction for filling up the above gaps is given in this chapter as a means through which further development of combining IoT and blockchain may be encouraged.
