The vulnerability affecting the Internet of Things (IoT) has captured significant attention within the scientific community. Consequently, numerous surveys have been conducted, covering various topics related to IoT, such as intrusion detection systems, threat modeling, and emerging technologies. However, our focus in this work is exclusively on the continuously evolving vulnerabilities of IoT. We begin by offering a thorough categorization of the latest research efforts that cover different aspects of the Internet of Things paradigm within this framework. This is intended to assist IoT research endeavours by integrating, contrasting, and comparing various research initiatives. Following that, we present a distinctive taxonomy that elucidates IoT vulnerabilities, their attack vectors, the impact they have on different security objectives, the attacks exploiting these vulnerabilities, the associated remediation strategies, and the operational cyber security capabilities that are presently available to estimate and track these weaknesses. Providing the reader with a comprehensive study that offers insights into the vulnerabilities of the Internet of Things, including their technological details and implications that will help them accomplish their repair objectives. Additionally, this aims to impart operational situational awareness skills, effectively highlighting the severity of the IoT problems, which would undoubtedly contribute to the overall mitigation effort. Perceptive results, conclusions, and results are also disclosed in this work, along with unresolved questions and research gaps that, in our opinion, will pave the way for other studies tackling factors relating to theory and empirical related to the critical subject of IoT security.
