The need for assured academic credentials is much higher than the gross inadequacies of the present certification systems regarding vulnerability to fraud, cumbersome processing procedures, or slow verification procedures—the possibility offered by blockchain technology regarding effective management and verification of academic credentials. Since the blockchain is decentralized, secure, and transparent, the applications of this research are discussed to set up a reliable digital ledger for issuing and verifying credentials to foster greater trust between educational institutions, employers, and students. It portrays real-life usage cases at MIT Blockcerts for demonstrating fraud prevention, verification acceleration, and student anonymity protection. It involves discussions on which much elaboration is required on some significant barriers to implementing blockchain in education, such as high upfront costs, compatibility issues, and resistance to technological advancement change.
