The Future of Programming and Programmers

Abstract The present paper was presented in part at the Fall Joint Computer Conference, Las Vegas, Nevada, 1963, as part of a session on, “The Future of Computers.” The title of the talk was originally, “The Future of Software.” The new title is an attempt to attack an even larger portion of the problem. Many of the comments given here have arisen from the author’s recent discussions with colleagues in The Moore School of Electrical Engineering, University of Pennsylvania, particularly Saul Gorn, Josh Gray, Noah Prywes, and Morris Rubinoff.
