Introduction of Computing to Schools

L T G Clarke, V. E. Price · ITNOW · 1963

For the purposes of this paper we define computing as numerical work and the logical breakdown of a calculation into elementary steps. After the student has left school this would develop into advanced numerical analysis and the whole range of activity involved in programming an electronic computer. A number of projects for revising the mathematics syllabus of schools and for providing suitable textbooks associated with this have been initiated. One, in which at present eight schools are concerned, has been organised as a research project of Southampton University. A new O-level syllabus has been devised and a corresponding examination will be set in 1964. The A-level syllabus is being revised with the help of an advisory group of university mathematicians. A similar scheme, the “Midlands Mathematical Experiment” in which seven schools are taking part, has been organised from the City of Worcester Training College. A new O-lcvel syllabus has been provided and a small pilot examination will be held in 1964 or 1965.
