Enhancing Healthcare IoT with Fog Computing: A Simulation-Based Performance Analysis

Sanaz Rahimi Moosavi, Rodolfo Sanchez · 2025

This paper aims to provide a detailed analysis of fog computing and its advantages over the cloud computing. By utilizing the iFogSim simulation toolkit, the study facilitates a comprehensive comparison between the two computing models, with a particular emphasis on latency and network utilization. The simulation results clearly demonstrate that fogbased architectures surpass cloud-based architectures, especially in scenarios where real-time applications are critical, such as healthcare systems. This is particularly important for healthcare Internet of Things (IoT), where real-time monitoring and analysis of patient data is essential for timely interventions and improved patient outcomes. The findings suggest that fog computing can enhance the efficiency and dependability of IoT-based systems in healthcare, thereby rendering it a feasible solution for a variety of healthcare applications. Furthermore, the study highlights the potential for fog computing to address the scalability and security concerns associated with cloud computing in healthcare, making it a promising technology for the future of healthcare IoT.
