Abstract Much time has elapsed since Dr Hollerith decided to make use of mechanical devices to help him analyse census returns, yet today the majority of computer installations still use his data input medium, punched cards. It can be argued that Hollerith selected a most versatile and cheap method of recording data, but it does not necessarily follow that by present standards this system is the most economic.
