Analysis of the Possibilities of Implementation Correcting Linear Block Codes into the Modbus Protocol

Stepan A. Chapliyov, Alla B. Levina, Andrey Plotnikov · 2025

Correcting linear block codes offer a more robust approach to ensuring the integrity of transmitted data. Unlike traditional checksum algorithms, they not only detect transmission errors but also enable their correction. Modbus, a widely used communication protocol in industrial automation systems, currently relies on basic error detection mechanisms such as cycle redundancy check (CRC). This article analyzes the feasibility of integrating linear block codes into the Modbus protocol to enhance its reliability. The study evaluates various implementation scenarios and demonstrates that incorporating such codes can significantly improve error resilience with acceptable overhead.
