Web-Scale Deduplication

Kevin Saric · Queensland University of Technology · 2025

People now depend on cloud storage companies to store their personal files. These companies typically inspect the content of their users' files so they can 'deduplicate' common files, storing only a single copy. In this way, a cloud storage company can charge its users individually for the full cost of storing common files, even if there is no additional storage cost to the company. This thesis proposes 'universal deduplication', which shifts the advantage of deduplication from the companies to the users, while encrypting files to preserve users' privacy.
