The Sub-Department of Computation at Southampton University has for eight years had a Ferranti 8K Pegasus with magnetic tape facilities. Additional to the standard Pegasus Autocode, a matrix scheme and magnetic tape operations were available, and these all constituted what was called Pegasus Automat. Throughout the university there were many production programs written in Automat and it was felt to be essential to have a way of running these on the university’s new ICT 1909 after July 1966, the scheduled closure date for its Pegasus. Therefore the Pegasus Automat ‘load and go’ compiler CAMP was written. The core requirement depends on the number of variables and instructions allowed and can be altered by changing the appropriate parameters. The full Automat compiler requires 27K words of storage.† The minimum peripherals required are one paper tape reader, one paper tape punch, and one line printer: a magnetic tape for working purposes and one additional paper tape reader can be allotted by program. Input can be either five or eight track paper tape.
