Music, Noise, Sound Design, and Subtext

Pablo Frasconi · 2025

This chapter considers conventions and experiments in using voice-over in experimental documentaries as well as untraditional narrators. It explores the merging of silence, noise, dialogue, expressionist sound, and music to create physical, psychological, and emotional experiences in experimental documentary cinema practice. It explores the use of contrapuntal, diegetic, non-diegetic, and trans-diegetic sound and music, the use of sound metaphor, and introduces sonification, synesthesia, and the health effects of sound and noise. It gives an example of a fruitful director/editor/composer collaboration, and introduces sound in hyperreality.
