This paper investigates the interplay between covert sensing and communication in joint radar–communication systems by outlining a mathematical framework to dissect the influence of pilot signals and imperfect channel estimation. Closed-form expressions are derived for key performance metrics, including outage probability (OP), ergodic capacity (EC), mutual information (MI), and detection error probability (DEP). Moreover, a joint radar power and time resource allocation scheme is developed to maximize the MI while satisfying both covert sensing requirements and communication performance. Theoretical analyses and simulation results reveal the impacts of radars transmit power setting on the OP and DEP performance trends and highlight the trade-offs between MI and EC, as well as between training and data transmission times.
