Quantum Computing in Medical Device Security
John Chirillo · 2025
This chapter explores the intersection of quantum computing with medical device security, covering key concepts, potential applications, challenges, and future directions. It aims to arm us with knowledge to help us prepare for the quantum era. The chapter explores key quantum-resistant cryptographic methods, including lattice-based cryptography, hash-based signatures, code-based cryptography, and multivariate cryptography, and their applications in securing medical devices. It also explores the potential of quantum-enhanced sensing and metrology in medical devices. The chapter then explores advancements in quantum-safe network protocols, including post-quantum TLS, quantum-resistant VPNs, and hybrid cryptographic approaches. It examines three key aspects of these efforts: the NIST Post-Quantum Cryptography Standardization initiative, anticipated FDA guidance on quantum computing, and the international efforts led by ISO/IEC in standardizing quantum-safe cryptography. The chapter focuses on three critical aspects in preparation: education and training, risk assessment and migration strategies, and collaboration and knowledge sharing.
