Biometrics as a Key Factor for Emergent User Experience Evaluation

Juan Antonio Torrecilla-García, Agnieszka Grazyna Skotnicka · Biometrics · 2025

In an age of rapid digital transformation, biometric technologies are emerging as essential tools for evaluating user experience (UX) across diverse industries. This study explores the potential of biometrics—physiological and behavioral characteristic measurements—to provide objective, real-time insights into users&s; cognitive and emotional states, enhancing the limitations of traditional UX evaluation methods such as self-reports and observational data. Through a combination of theoretical analysis, scoping reviews, and case studies, the research underscores how biometric methods, including eye-tracking, facial expression analysis, and electroencephalography (EEG), enable granular, continuous UX data collection. These methodologies reveal subconscious reactions and micro-expressions that inform the design of personalized and adaptive user interfaces, especially in complex environments like augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The case studies highlight the transformative applications of biometrics in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, and gaming. For instance, gesture-based biometric systems in hotels streamline personalized guest experiences, while in healthcare, they enhance patient safety and secure access control. The findings also emphasize the integration of biometric data with AI and machine learning to create dynamic systems that adapt to users&s; real-time needs, heralding a new era in human-computer interaction. Despite these advancements, challenges such as cost, data reliability, user acceptance, and ethical considerations remain significant. Addressing these limitations is crucial for maximizing the efficacy of biometrics in UX research, paving the way for innovative and user-centric technological solutions.
