Toward Intelligence in Wireless Environments and Services
Victor Croisfelt · 2025
What does intelligence mean in wireless networks? One taxonomy defines three forms: 1) Environmental intelligence dynamically shapes the wireless propagation environment using devices like reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs); 2) Service intelligence enables networks to support intelligent services and the subsequent learning-driven traffic; and 3) Operational intelligence leverages AI to optimize communication functions. This thesis explores environmental and service intelligence to rethink wireless network engineering. For environmental intelligence, we propose three RIS-assisted protocols, analyze the negative impact of remote RIS control on system performance, and explore control-free alternatives. For service intelligence, we design two communication-efficient intelligent services in a label-less distributed setting by selectively labeling or data semantics-aware transmissions. We believe our contributions enhance the understanding of intelligence in shaping next-generation wireless networks.
