Abstract According to Bernard Shaw, ‘He who can, does; he who cannot, teaches ’ . The modern version of this maxim might well be phrased as ‘He who can, manages; he who cannot, talks about information systems’. This, at least, is the overwhelming impression left on us by Datafair, held at the Cunard International Hotel on 1–3 October; a view supported by the fact that the two best talks were given by ‘outsiders’, who have nothing to do with computer systems except as persons affected by them and in charge of staff who use computers — Sir Michael Swann, who opened Datafair, and Sir Claus Moser, who closed it.
