Machine independent command languages

David Flint, Ian A. Newman · ITNOW · 1980

Abstract In the period since the previous reports [1,2] the group has concerned itself primarily with modelling a system for executing jobs which will achieve the desired user interface(s) as introduced in those reports. The model represents the semantic definition of a command language which should enable implementors to ensure that each implementation does actually carry out the desired tasks in the required way. The outcome of the work is presented in this paper. In addition the group has examined a number of other topics relating to the user requirements, the most interesting of which is the problem of providing the scheduling and sequencing of job steps. This is covered in paper [3]. Finally, the group has been corresponding with other national and international groups working on machine independent command languages [4]. Of particular interest are the Codasyl and Ansi committees which are pledged to produce standards proposals.
