Data dictionary support for query languages

Thomas Lee, Charles Chang, Helen Hodgart, Ken Meyer · ITNOW · 1982

Abstract In August 1981, the British Computer Society’s Query Language Group published a functional specification for a high level query language facility. This facility would enable end-users to interrogate data held in computer data bases without having to understand the complexity common in large data bases. One important requirement of the Query Language Group’s proposals was for a data dictionary to support both the end-user and the functions of data base administration. This paper describes the type of support which a unified query facility would require of a data dictionary.
